Old-World Etching & Vintage Logo Design by Alexa Pulitzer

The best logos feel as though they've always existed. A logo drawn by hand carries the character, authority, and individuality of original artwork—the kind of visual identity that can become more distinctive with time rather than belonging to a particular design trend.

Antique Style Branding That Doesn't Follow Trends

Crests, seals, monograms, and heraldic marks have communicated identity, provenance, and belonging for centuries. There's a reason they still feel relevant today. They weren't created to follow a trend, and therefore they never seem to fall out of fashion.

Every logo I create begins with the subject and the story behind it. That subject might be a crest, monogram, mascot, motto, animal, botanical element, or meaningful symbol, but the approach remains the same: original artwork drawn by hand, with the precise linework, layered detail, and character of my signature old-world style.

The goal isn't to make something new look artificially old. It's to create an artistic mark with enough character and craftsmanship to feel as though it has always belonged to you.

My Monogram Items collection offers a glimpse into this approach through timeless monogram designs drawn in my distinctive style. My exclusive Antler Alphabet, for example, frames each letter with a pair of beautifully rendered antlers, transforming a simple initial into a distinctive mark with sporting character and old-world appeal.

Trends tell you when a logo was designed. Timeless design makes you forget to ask.

The Two Paths: Logo Design And Private Label

My branding work divides into two distinct offerings, each suited to a different scope and purpose.

Alexa Pulitzer Logo Design Services

For custom logos, each new commission is drawn from scratch for the client, using my existing collection as a reference point for the design conversation. Original illustrated logo commissions begin at $3,000, and that starting investment includes original hand-drawn artwork in my signature old-world etching style, plus custom stylized typography featuring your name, business, or property. From there, you’ll get one round of revisions at the pencil-sketch stage, a finished single-color logo, commercial usage rights, and the final approved artwork delivered in JPEG, PNG, and vector formats.

Every commission begins with my Custom Logo Intake Form, followed by a 30-minute virtual private consultation to refine the creative direction, and a 50% deposit to reserve the project and begin the creative process. I typically present the first pencil sketch within two to three weeks of receiving your deposit, and a completed commission generally takes four to six weeks from start to finish, depending on the season and the complexity of the artwork.

The scale of the project can vary considerably. For a custom monogram or cipher, we might begin with a single illustrated initial rendered entirely in my style. For a business, sporting lodge, private club, restaurant, hotel, or property, we might develop an original mascot or emblem paired with custom typography to create a distinctive identity that can live beautifully across stationery, signage, packaging, cups, cocktail napkins, correspondence, and other branded pieces.

My Engraved Notes collection offers a glimpse of how an illustrated mark translates to fine correspondence—often one of the first and most beautiful places a newly commissioned logo finds its home. The finished logo may be delivered digitally, but it always begins the old-fashioned way: by hand.

Private Label Branding

Private Label is a different category of work entirely. While a custom logo becomes the client's own visual identity, my Private Label work is created for institutions, cultural destinations, hotels, museums, and retailers that want original Alexa Pulitzer artwork and products developed specifically for their brand and audience.

Over the years, I've created Private Label collections for the National World War II Museum, Monticello, the U.S. Senate, Biltmore Estate, Tory Burch, LoveShackFancy, and The Sazerac House. These collaborations pair my signature illustration style with the history, architecture, symbols, or visual identity of each client to create products that feel unmistakably theirs while retaining the distinctive hand of Alexa Pulitzer, US manufacturing and premium materials.

For a museum or historic institution with a gift shop, a hotel developing a branded amenity or retail program, or a retailer looking for proprietary illustrated stationery and entertaining pieces, Private Label offers the opportunity to create something customers cannot simply find elsewhere.

The process begins with a conversation about your brand, history, audience, and existing visual language. From there, we consider the artwork, product assortment, format, packaging, and production needed to turn that story into a cohesive collection.

The goal isn't simply to put your name on a product. It's to create a product that could only belong to you.

Where The Logo Lives Beyond The Screen

A beautifully illustrated logo shouldn't live exclusively on a screen. It comes fully to life when it becomes something you can hold, touch, wear, wrap, pour from, or encounter in a physical space. Engraved into fine stationery, printed on packaging, embroidered onto apparel, or carried across the details of a hotel, restaurant, sporting lodge, or retail collection, original artwork gives a brand a tangible presence.

One of the pleasures of creating a hand-drawn identity is imagining all the places it might eventually live. Here are some of my favorite ways to take an original Alexa Pulitzer logo off the screen and into the world.

On Correspondence, Embossing & Wax Seals

There is something wonderfully authoritative about a crest embossed into fine paper. With no ink at all, a custom logo pressed into an envelope by a desk embosser gives the correspondence a quiet sense of provenance before the recipient has even opened it. My Embossers collection includes the tools that allow a custom crest, monogram, or logo to become part of your everyday correspondence.

A wax seal makes an entirely different impression. Stamped onto the flap of an envelope, it draws upon centuries of heraldic tradition and gives a hand-drawn mark a wonderfully tactile, ceremonial quality. My Stamps collection includes rubber and wax stamping options that bring an original logo beautifully to life on stationery, invitations, packaging, and correspondence.

Whether pressed into paper or stamped into wax, an original crest or monogram becomes more than an identifying mark. It becomes a signature—one your recipient recognizes before reading a single word.

On Books, Labels, Bookmarks, Porcelain Valets, And Keepsakes

A beautifully drawn crest doesn't have to remain confined to business stationery. Some of its most interesting applications are the personal ones—the objects that become part of a home, a library, or a family's traditions.

A custom bookplate, for example, carries a family name or crest into the private library. Adhered inside the cover of each volume, it transforms a collection of books into something with provenance—a particularly fitting detail for a family home, hunting lodge, sporting estate, or anyone building a library intended to be passed down. My Bookplates collection shows how my original artwork translates beautifully into this centuries-old tradition.

The same illustrated identity can extend to bookmarks, personalized labels, porcelain valet trays, keepsakes, and even the dinner table. My Custom Porcelain Dinnerware collection allows an original crest, monogram, or illustration to become part of a bespoke table setting—transforming a personal mark into something used for family dinners, holidays, celebrations, and entertaining for years to come.

A crest might begin as a logo, but over time it can become something much more personal: a visual signature carried throughout the home and across the objects and traditions that belong to you. That's the beauty of a well-designed crest—it doesn't simply identify something. It gives it provenance.

Versatile Vintage Logo Design Made For A Particular Purpose

Old-world logo design suits a particular kind of client—someone who values original artwork, craftsmanship, symbolism, and a visual identity with a sense of permanence. Whether I'm drawing for a family, sporting property, business, or institution, the objective is the same: to create a mark that belongs specifically to them and nowhere else.

  • The Sporting Property or Hunting Lodge: A hunting lodge, fishing camp, sporting club, or country estate with its own original crest immediately has a stronger sense of place. The wildlife, landscape, architecture, initials, or symbols meaningful to the property can become part of an identity drawn specifically for that land and belonging nowhere else.
  • The Family With a Name Worth Marking: A custom family crest or illustrated monogram has the wonderful ability to travel through generations. What begins on stationery can find its way onto bookplates, correspondence, porcelain dinnerware, linens, labels, wax seals, gates, and keepsakes. Over time, the artwork becomes less like a logo and more like a family signature—recognizable without explanation and entirely their own.
  • The Business That Wants an Identity With History and Character: A restaurant, hotel, retailer, professional practice, or hospitality brand may be new, but its identity doesn't have to feel temporary. An original illustrated logo can give a business an immediate sense of character, confidence, and provenance, while creating a visual language that translates beautifully across signage, menus, stationery, packaging, uniforms, entertaining pieces, and digital applications.
  • The Institution With a Gift or Private Label Program: For a museum, historic property, cultural institution, hotel, or destination retailer, my Private Label work turns the institution's own story into original illustrated products created specifically for its audience. Architecture, artifacts, symbols, history, or a sense of place can become the foundation for a collection that visitors are delighted to discover—and equally delighted to take home.
  • Private Clubs & Membership Organizations — A country club, yacht club, golf club, equestrian club, sporting club, or social organization is built around something wonderfully old-fashioned: belonging. A custom crest, monogram, mascot, or emblem can express the traditions and character members share while creating an identity that carries naturally across club stationery, apparel, menus, cups, cocktail napkins, event invitations, trophies, signage, and member gifts. Done well, the mark doesn't simply identify the club—it becomes a symbol members are proud to recognize as their own.
  • Hotels, Inns & Hospitality Properties —The most memorable hotels create a world guests recognize in every detail. An original illustrated logo can become the thread that runs through that experience—from the sign at the entrance to menus, matchbooks, stationery, cocktail napkins, cups, guest-room amenities, packaging, and keepsakes inthe hotel shop. Whether it's a grand hotel, historic inn, intimate resort, restaurant, or private event venue, the right artwork can capture its architecture, location, history, or personality and give guests an immediate sense of place.
  • Farms, Vineyards & Equestrian Properties — A property with history, landscape, and tradition deserves an identity equally rooted in place. A beloved horse, architectural detail, grapevine, botanical, family initial, or symbol drawn from the land can become an original crest that feels as though it has always belonged there. From estate signage and stationery to wine labels, linens, correspondence, packaging, and entertaining pieces, the artwork gives the property a visual signature that is entirely its own.
  • The Entrepreneur or Founder Building a Personal Brand — For an interior designer, architect, event planner, florist, artist, jeweler, consultant, or creative entrepreneur, your name often is the brand. An original hand-drawn logo, monogram, or emblem can give that name a distinctive visual identity—one that reflects your taste and point of view before a client ever meets you. From business cards and stationery to packaging, proposals, websites, social media, signage, and client gifts, the artwork becomes a recognizable signature carried throughout your business. When you're selling your own vision, your identity should feel every bit as original as the work behind it.
  • Weddings & Family Celebrations — A wedding is often the first occasion when two people begin thinking about their names and visual identity as something shared. I can create an original wedding crest, monogram, or illustrated emblem that begins on the invitation and carries through the celebration—from cups, cocktail napkins, menus, programs, welcome gifts, wax seals, and signage to the thank-you notes sent afterward. And unlike artwork created solely for the wedding day, a thoughtfully designed crest can follow the couple home, appearing years later on personal stationery, bookplates, custom porcelain dinnerware, linens, and family keepsakes.

Every logo I draw begins with essentially the same question I've been asking for more than 30 years: What does this name, place, or story look like when it becomes a piece of art?The answer should never feel borrowed or generic. It should be specific, original, meaningful—and drawn by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. An original logo, crest, or monogram designed in my studio can extend well beyond the digital world. Depending on the artwork and application, it can be translated across stationery, correspondence, embossers, stamps, bookplates, cups, cocktail napkins, hand towels, custom porcelain dinnerware, koozies, stickers, and many other pieces within my collections.

The beauty of a thoughtfully designed mark is its versatility. It shouldn't live in just one place—it should become a visual signature that follows you, your family, property, or business wherever it makes sense.

Original illustrated logo commissions begin at $3,000. The starting investment includes an original single-color illustration drawn by hand in my signature old-world etching style, custom stylized typography, one round of revisions at the pencil-sketch stage, final approved digital artwork in JPEG, PNG, and vector formats, and commercial usage rights.

A 50% deposit reserves your project and begins the creative process, with the remaining balance due upon approval of the final artwork.

A custom logo commission generally takes four to six weeks from start to finish, depending on the time of year and complexity of the design. After receiving your completed intake form, consultation, and deposit, I typically present the first pencil sketch within two to three weeks.

Because every commission begins as an original drawing rather than an existing template, the timeline allows me to give the artwork the attention and detail it deserves.

After all, the goal isn't to create a logo for the moment. It's to create one you'll still love decades from now.

Every custom logo project begins with my Custom Logo Intake Form, where you'll share a little about yourself, your business, family, property, or organization; what you'd like the artwork to represent; and how you envision using your new identity.

Once I've reviewed your form, we'll schedule a private virtual consultation with me to discuss your story, inspiration, aesthetic, and creative direction. A 50% deposit then reserves your project and officially begins the design process.

From there, I put pencil to paper. Your first original sketch is typically presented within two to three weeks, beginning the process of turning your story into a visual identity that is entirely your own.
